Why Keto Worked For Me
My journey began nine months ago. It was New Years Eve. I was about to leave for a party, and I made a vow to myself that I would never forget.
My chronic acid reflux had flared up and my anxiety was getting to a point where it affected my day-to-day life. My husband and I, both previously in good shape and health, had recently lost a close family member due to pancreatic cancer. It was devastating. We resorted to food and it became a source of comfort. Our exercising pretty much came to a halt.
I remember thinking on New Year's Eve that something needed to change. My only drawback was the statistic that majority of people who make resolutions give up two weeks into the new year. I couldn't be a part of that statistic. My life seemed to be closing in on me and that tunnel of light ahead seemed to be fading fast. Our lack of exercise, poor food choices, and outlook on life began to catch up to us.
I had always heard that eating healthy was too expensive and that most Americans couldn't afford it. This was a big worry for me. We were missionaries at the time and our food budget was obsolete.
The only thing I had heard of recently was called the Ketogenic lifestyle. My sister-in-law had lost a large amount of weight while following this program. I knew I at least needed to give it a shot. I needed to jump all in.
The only information I knew at the time regarding the Keto lifestyle was that it consisted of eating low-carb, high fat, and high protein. That night our garbage can was overflowing with frozen pasta dinners, potato chips, Little Debbies, soda, and tons of candy. I mean tons of candy! I was practically a candy addict.
January 1st, 2018 I began each and every day with a 40g carb limit. The first few weeks were hard but I found comfort in knowing that I could have an unlimited amount of veggies and meat without going over my daily limit of carbs. I dropped about 20 pounds in the first two months.
We were surviving off of the meat, cheese, and produce from Aldi. Aldi is known for their affordable prices and large selection of healthy options. I don't think we would have been able to keep up with our healthy eating if it didn't exist.
Looking back to where we started I often times laugh. We didn't know anything about eating healthy and honestly didn't research it much. Now I have become an advocate for eating a low-carb diet while working out 4-5 times per week. I have gained so much knowledge about the Keto lifestyle and plan on writing another blog about its benefits soon.
Since I began I have lost a total of 36 pounds, built so much muscle, and gained my life back. I rarely struggle with anxiety now and my acid reflux is pretty much nonexistent. I praise God for the strength to push through when it was tough. These nine months haven't been easy but I would never want to go back.
I write this today feeling empowered. I have so much knowledge about eating healthy and I want to share it with the world. What I was feeling nine months ago may be what a lot of people are feeling right now. Today is never too late to start!
